How Much Does Website Development Cost in India in 2026?

A custom business website in India typically costs from roughly ₹2.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh for a marketing site, and ₹7 lakh to ₹17 lakh or more for a web app or store. Here is what actually moves the number.

If you have asked three agencies for a website quote in India, you have probably received three numbers that look unrelated. One says ₹40,000. Another says ₹3 lakh. A third says ₹12 lakh. All three can be honest. They are pricing three different things under the same name.

This guide gives you the ranges we see for real projects in 2026, explains what moves the price, and shows you how to write a scope that makes quotes comparable. The figures below match our public pricing page; every project is still scoped individually after a discovery call.

The short answer: typical website costs in 2026

Type of projectTypical range (USD)Roughly in INRTypical timeline
Marketing site or landing page (up to ~8 pages)$3,000 – $6,000₹2.5 – 5 lakh2–4 weeks
Web app, e-commerce store or MVP$8,000 – $20,000₹7 – 17 lakh6–10 weeks
Full SaaS platform or cross-platform app$20,000 – $60,000₹17 – 50 lakh10–16 weeks

INR figures are approximate and move with the exchange rate. These are ranges for custom work from an experienced studio, not template installs or one-person freelance quotes, which can sit well below the first row and carry different trade-offs.

What actually drives the price

1. Custom design versus a template

A template site starts from someone else's layout and swaps in your content. A custom site starts from your audience and your goals, which means research, wireframes and a design system before any code. Custom design is the largest single swing in a quote, and the one that most affects whether the site converts.

2. Number of unique page types

Ten blog posts are one template. Ten different landing pages are ten designs. Price follows the number of distinct layouts, not the page count, so list your page types rather than your pages.

3. Integrations and custom functionality

Payments, user accounts, a CRM, booking, a dealer locator, multi-language support — each is a small project inside the project. A contact form is free; a payment flow with refunds is not.

4. Content management

If your team will edit the site themselves, the build needs a CMS and a structure that makes editing safe. It adds cost up front and removes a developer from every future text change.

5. Performance and SEO engineering

Fast load times, clean semantic markup, structured data, correct redirects and a proper sitemap are far cheaper to build in than to retrofit. A site that cannot be crawled or loads slowly on mobile quietly loses the traffic you built it to win.

6. Content: who writes it

Copywriting, photography and product data entry are usually outside a development quote. They are also the most common reason a launch slips. Decide early who owns them.

How to compare quotes properly

  • Ask each vendor to list the page templates, integrations and CMS they are pricing.
  • Confirm whether design is custom and whether you receive the design files.
  • Check who owns the source code at handover. You want full ownership, with no lock-in.
  • Ask what support is included after launch, and for how many days.
  • Ask how SEO is handled: structured data, sitemap, redirects, Core Web Vitals.
  • Get the payment schedule in writing. Milestone-based payment keeps incentives aligned.

Ways to spend less without ruining the result

  • Launch a smaller first phase. A sharp eight-page site beats a sprawling thirty-page one.
  • Write your content before design starts so layouts are built around real copy.
  • Use proven components instead of inventing new interactions for every section.
  • Postpone nice-to-have integrations until the first version proves its value.
  • Pick one decision-maker on your side. Feedback rounds are where budgets quietly double.

Where cheap websites cost you later

A very low quote is not automatically a bad deal, but it usually removes something. Common casualties are performance work, accessibility, security hardening, handover documentation and post-launch support. Those are invisible on launch day and expensive by month six. If a number looks too low, ask what is missing from the scope, not how they do it so cheaply.

How we scope a website at VeltrexLabs

We start with a discovery call, then send a fixed quote with the scope written out before work begins. We build on Next.js, React and TypeScript, hand over full source code, and include post-launch support in every tier. You can browse recent work — from manufacturing catalogues to healthcare brands — on our projects page, or read about our web development service.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a business website cost in India?

A custom marketing website of up to about eight pages typically costs between $3,000 and $6,000 (roughly ₹2.5 to ₹5 lakh) with an experienced studio and takes two to four weeks. Template-based sites from freelancers can cost far less, and complex web applications or online stores cost considerably more.

Why do website development quotes vary so much?

Because 'a website' covers very different things. Quotes differ on custom design versus templates, number of pages and templates, integrations, content management, performance and SEO work, and how much support follows launch. Two quotes are only comparable once you have written down the same scope.

How long does it take to build a website?

A focused marketing site takes two to four weeks. An e-commerce store or custom web application usually takes six to ten weeks. Delays almost always come from late content and slow feedback rather than from development.

Is WordPress cheaper than a custom website?

Usually cheaper to start, not always cheaper to own. WordPress suits content-heavy sites with non-technical editors. A custom Next.js build costs more up front but typically needs less plugin maintenance and is easier to make fast. The right choice depends on who edits the site and how much performance matters.

What ongoing costs should I budget for after launch?

Domain and hosting (often modest for a marketing site), any paid third-party services, and optional maintenance or a retainer for changes. Ask every vendor what support is included after launch and for how long.
