LCP, INP and CLS are three numbers Google uses to judge how your website feels to visitors. Here is what they mean, what a good score looks like and the fixes that move them most.
If you have ever run your website through a speed test and seen red numbers, you have met Core Web Vitals. They are three measurements Google uses to judge how a page feels to a real person. You do not need to be technical to understand them, and you can often improve them with a handful of changes.
| Metric | What it measures | Good | Poor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) | How fast the main content, usually the biggest image or heading, appears | 2.5 s or less | Over 4 s |
| Interaction to Next Paint (INP) | How quickly the page reacts after a tap, click or key press | 200 ms or less | Over 500 ms |
| Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) | How much things move around while the page loads | 0.1 or less | Over 0.25 |
Google judges each metric at the 75th percentile of real visits, which means three out of four visitors should have at least that good an experience. Interaction to Next Paint replaced an older metric called First Input Delay in 2024.
A speed test such as PageSpeed Insights runs your page once on a simulated phone and gives a score from 0 to 100. That is lab data, useful for finding problems. Real-user data comes from Chrome visitors over the previous 28 days and is what Google actually uses. Your site needs enough traffic to have it, so small sites often only see lab results.

Open the website speed checkerMostly in two ways. A slow page loses visitors who never come back, which means fewer enquiries from the same traffic. And when two pages are otherwise equally relevant, the faster one has an edge in search. Fix the biggest problems first rather than chasing a perfect 100.

Good is an LCP of 2.5 seconds or less, an INP of 200 milliseconds or less and a CLS of 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile of real visits.
They are part of Google's page experience signals, so they can influence ranking, but relevance and content quality matter more. Speed is most useful as a tie-breaker and as a way to keep visitors who arrive.
The PageSpeed score comes from a lab test run once under simulated conditions. Core Web Vitals in Search Console come from real visitors over 28 days. The real-user data is what Google uses for ranking.
