If you are a UK founder or a business owner pricing up an app, you have probably noticed the gap: quotes from UK agencies and quotes from India-based teams can differ by a multiple. The gap is real. So are the stories of projects that went wrong after someone chose the cheapest option abroad.

This guide is written by an India-based studio, so read it with that in mind. We will tell you where outsourcing to India works well, where it does not, and what to check before you sign anything. We would rather you choose well, even if that is not us.

The short version

Outsourcing to India works when scope is written down, payments follow milestones, you own the code and the IP in writing, and you can see working software every week. It fails when any of those are missing, in any country.

Why UK businesses hire India-based teams

  • Cost: day rates in India are typically a fraction of those in London and other UK hubs, so the same budget buys more engineering time or a longer runway.
  • Depth of talent: India has a very large pool of experienced mobile and web engineers, including React Native and TypeScript specialists.
  • Speed to a first release: a lean team can move quickly when scope is tight, which matters for startups testing a product.
  • Flexibility: scaling a team up or down is easier than hiring and managing UK employees.

What it costs

These are our published ranges for custom work from an experienced studio. They are not fixed prices, and they exclude third-party fees, app store accounts and content. At recent exchange rates, $8,000 to $60,000 is very roughly £6,000 to £45,000, but check the current rate before you budget.

ProjectTypical range (USD)Typical timeline
Focused app MVP: one core flow, login, simple backend$8,000 – $20,0006–10 weeks
Full cross-platform app (iOS and Android) with backend$20,000 – $60,00010–16 weeks
Complex platform: real-time, multi-role, deep integrationsAbove $60,00016+ weeks

The real risks, and how to manage each

1. Vague scope

This causes more failed projects than geography. If the brief says "an Uber for dog walking", every quote will be a guess and every change an argument. Write down the user flows, the screens and what is out of scope for version one, then ask each agency to price the same document.

2. Communication and time zones

India is 4.5 to 5.5 hours ahead of the UK (the gap changes with British Summer Time). That is a smaller gap than most people expect: a 10:00 call in London is mid-afternoon in India. Agree a regular rhythm: a weekly demo, a shared task board and one named person who answers your questions.

3. Variable quality

Quality varies enormously between agencies, as it does in the UK. Judge on evidence: live apps you can download, code you can have reviewed, and past clients you can speak to. A polished sales deck proves nothing.

4. Ownership of the code and the IP

Under UK law, software commissioned from a supplier is not automatically owned by whoever paid for it. Your contract should assign the intellectual property to you in writing, and the code should live in a repository you control from the first day, not in the agency's account.

5. Personal data

If the team will touch personal data about people in the UK, sending it to India is a restricted transfer under UK GDPR and needs a recognised safeguard, for example the ICO's International Data Transfer Agreement or the UK Addendum to the EU standard clauses. The easiest route is to build and test with dummy data so real personal data never leaves your systems. This is general information, so take advice from a solicitor for your own situation.

A contract checklist for UK buyers

  1. 1.A written scope with deliverables, and a clear process for changes.
  2. 2.Payments tied to milestones you can verify, not a large payment up front.
  3. 3.A written assignment of intellectual property to your company.
  4. 4.Source code in your own repository from day one.
  5. 5.A confidentiality agreement before you share the idea or any data.
  6. 6.Data-protection terms and a safeguard for any personal data that is transferred.
  7. 7.What happens after launch: bug-fix period, support and handover documentation.
  8. 8.A way to end the contract and take the work with you.
  9. 9.A question for your accountant: how VAT applies to services bought from an overseas supplier. For business customers this is usually handled under the reverse charge, but confirm for your case.

How to choose an India-based agency

  • Open their live projects and test them on your phone. Check speed and polish.
  • Ask for two or three client references and actually call them.
  • Ask who will build your product, not who will pitch it.
  • Check that pricing is explained, not just quoted. Good agencies show you what drives the cost.
  • Look for a structured process: discovery, design sign-off, short build cycles and demos.
  • Be wary of a price far below every other quote, of promises to start tomorrow with no questions, and of any reluctance to hand over the code.

When outsourcing to India is the wrong choice

Be honest with yourself about three situations. If you cannot write down what you want, you will struggle with any agency. If your product needs constant in-person collaboration with regulators or customers, a local team may suit you better. And if you are building core technology that is your company's whole value, you may want a founding engineer in-house, with an agency for everything around it.

How we work with UK clients

VeltrexLabs is a small team based in Rajkot, Gujarat. We build iOS and Android apps in React Native, websites on Next.js and TypeScript, and SaaS products, working UK-friendly hours with weekly demos, a shared tracker and a named point of contact. You own the source code. One of our web clients, Odd Muse, is a London womenswear brand.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe for a UK company to outsource app development to India?

It can be, when the process is structured: a written scope, milestone-based payments, regular demos, the source code in a repository you control, and a contract that assigns the intellectual property to you. Most failures come from vague scope and weak contracts, not from the country.

How much does it cost to have an app built in India?

A focused MVP typically costs $8,000 to $20,000 over six to ten weeks. A full cross-platform product with a backend usually runs $20,000 to $60,000 over ten to sixteen weeks. Convert at the current exchange rate to compare with UK quotes.

How do we work across the time difference?

India is 4.5 to 5.5 hours ahead of the UK. UK mornings and early afternoons fall inside an Indian working day, so calls and quick questions work well, and written updates and recorded demos cover the rest.

Who owns the code if we outsource?

It depends on the contract. Under UK law, commissioned software is not automatically owned by the person who paid for it, so your contract should include a written assignment of intellectual property to you, and the code should live in a repository you own from day one.

Do we need special data-protection arrangements?

If the team will handle personal data of UK individuals, transferring it to India is a restricted transfer under UK GDPR and needs a recognised safeguard such as the ICO's International Data Transfer Agreement or the UK Addendum. The simplest approach is to build and test with dummy data. Take advice from a solicitor for your own case.
