Most founders asking what an app costs are really asking two questions: how much do I need to raise, and what do I get for it? The honest answer to the first is a range, and the range is set by decisions you make before a developer opens an editor.

Below are the ranges we use at VeltrexLabs, the factors that move them, and how to scope a first version that tests your idea without funding your entire wish list.

Mobile app development cost by scope

ScopeTypical range (USD)Roughly in INRTimeline
Focused MVP: one core flow, auth, basic backend$8,000 – $20,000₹7 – 17 lakh6–10 weeks
Full cross-platform app (iOS + Android), backend, subscriptions$20,000 – $60,000₹17 – 50 lakh10–16 weeks
Complex platform: real-time, multi-role, deep integrationsAbove $60,000Scoped individually16+ weeks

These are indicative ranges for custom work, not fixed prices. They exclude third-party service fees, store accounts and content creation.

The decisions that move the number

Native, cross-platform or web app

Building two native apps roughly doubles a large part of the work. A cross-platform framework like React Native lets one team ship both platforms from largely shared code, which is why it is our default for most client products. We reach for native when the product depends on platform-specific hardware features, or when raw performance is the product.

Backend and data

The screens are the visible half. User accounts, a database, an API, file storage and an admin dashboard are the other half, and often the bigger one. An app that works offline and syncs later costs more than one that is always online.

Design depth

A tested design system with prototypes costs more than reusing standard components, and pays back in fewer rebuilds and better conversion. Do the design work properly once.

Integrations

Payments, maps, chat, OCR, push notifications, subscriptions and third-party APIs each add a bounded chunk of work. Decide which are needed to prove the idea and which can wait.

Compliance and store requirements

Payments, health, education and children's data carry extra requirements. App store review rules also shape what you can build and how you can monetise it.

How to build a smaller first version

  1. 1.Name the one job the app must do better than anything else. Everything else is version two.
  2. 2.Cut every screen that does not serve that job.
  3. 3.Use proven services for auth, payments and notifications rather than building them.
  4. 4.Launch to a small group of real users and watch what they do, not what they say.
  5. 5.Fund the second round from what you learned.
A worked example

We took a social food app from idea to launch in three months by following exactly this approach, including the features we deliberately left out.

Costs people forget

  • Apple and Google developer accounts, and store compliance work.
  • Backend hosting, databases and third-party service fees that scale with usage.
  • Maintenance for new iOS and Android releases, which arrive every year.
  • Bug fixing and feature work after launch. Budget for it, because the first release is a beginning.
  • Marketing. An app does not get downloaded because it exists.

Working with us

We scope every app individually, quote a fixed price before work starts, and hand over the full source code. See our mobile app development service for how we work, or look through recent projects such as Boothly and eConverter.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to build a mobile app in India?

A focused MVP typically falls in the $8,000 to $20,000 range (roughly ₹7 to ₹17 lakh) over six to ten weeks. A full cross-platform product with backend, subscriptions and real-time features usually runs $20,000 to $60,000 over ten to sixteen weeks. Scope, not location, is the dominant factor.

Is it cheaper to build one cross-platform app or two native apps?

For most products, one cross-platform codebase such as React Native is meaningfully cheaper to build and maintain than separate iOS and Android apps. Native makes sense when you depend heavily on platform-specific features or need the very best performance for a graphics-intensive experience.

How long does mobile app development take?

Six to ten weeks for a well-scoped MVP, ten to sixteen weeks for a full product. App store review, back-and-forth on content and late changes to scope are the usual causes of delay.

What are the hidden costs of a mobile app?

Backend hosting and third-party services, app store developer accounts, push notification and analytics tools, maintenance for new OS releases, and the ongoing work of fixing bugs and adding features after launch. Plan for maintenance as a line item, not a surprise.

Should I build an MVP first?

Almost always yes. An MVP tests whether people want the product before you pay for everything you imagine it might need. It is also the cheapest way to learn what to build next.
